Want to protect your boiler and heating system? Here’s what you can do:
DIY Checks You Can Do
Check if you have one
Look at the pipework near your boiler. Magnetic filters are usually black cylinders (about the size of a large mug) fitted to the return pipe.
Get it serviced annually
If you have one, it needs cleaning out annually during your boiler service as sludge builds up inside.
Consider fitting one
If you don’t have a magnetic filter, especially if your system is over five years old, it’s worth considering.
Check for sludge signs
Black water when bleeding radiators, cold spots on radiators, or a noisy boiler suggest sludge problems that a filter helps prevent.

A magnetic filter (such as MagnaClean) is a device fitted to your heating system that captures metal debris, rust, and sludge before it circulates and causes damage.
How it works: Powerful magnets inside attract and trap iron oxide (rust) particles and other metal debris. Clean water flows through while dirty particles stay trapped.
Where it fits: Usually on the return pipe to the boiler, where water comes back from radiators.
Why Do You Need One?
Over time, heating systems develop sludge made up of rust, limescale, and debris. This sludge damages boilers, reduces efficiency, causes cold radiators, shortens boiler life, and creates noise.
A magnetic filter captures this sludge before it circulates, protecting your system and saving on costly repairs.
Benefits of Magnetic Filters
Protects boiler – Prevents sludge from damaging components like heat exchangers and pumps.
Extends boiler life – Cleaner systems last longer; manufacturers often extend warranties when filters are fitted.
Improves efficiency – Clean systems heat faster and use less energy.
Quieter operation – Less sludge means less noise.
Protects new boilers – Prevents existing system sludge from damaging new installations.
Cleaner system – Continuously captures new sludge as it forms.
Easy maintenance – Simple to clean during annual service.
How Much Do They Cost?
Magnetic filter supply and fitting typically costs between £150–£250 depending on:
Filter brand and size
Installation complexity
Whether it’s done during a boiler service or as a separate visit
Running costs are zero — cleaning is usually included in your annual boiler service.
Are They Worth It?
For most homes, yes. Consider:
New boiler: Essential protection for your investment. Some manufacturers require filters for warranty validity.
Existing system (over five years old): Highly recommended — older systems often have sludge build-up.
Hard water areas: Extra beneficial, as corrosion and limescale build-up are more common.
Large systems: More radiators mean more potential for sludge.
Previous sludge issues: If you’ve had cold radiators or black water, a filter is a must.
What Happens During Cleaning?
Annual cleaning is quick and simple, usually done during a boiler service. The engineer isolates the filter, removes the sludge, cleans the magnet and filter body, then reassembles it. The process takes about ten minutes.
