Do You Actually Need Boiler Breakdown Cover?
Every autumn, the big energy suppliers push boiler breakdown cover hard, also sold as boiler and central heating cover or boiler care plans. British Gas HomeCare, HomeServe, CORGi HomePlan. You'll see them on TV, in junk mail, on comparison sites. The pitch is simple: pay us £25-40 a month and if your boiler breaks, we'll come and fix it.
We're Advanced Heating & Plumbing, a local Gas Safe engineer covering Watford, Hertfordshire, London and Middlesex. Trading since 1998. We don't sell cover plans. This page explains why, and what makes more sense for most households. Includes an honest comparison of what a cover plan actually costs versus what a repair from a local engineer actually costs.
What it actually costs
Let's put the two options side by side. Typical national cover plan first, then what Advanced Heating & Plumbing charges pay-per-visit at our current 2026 rates.
A typical national cover plan:
- Monthly subscription: £25-40
- Annual cost: £300-480
- Excess per call-out: £75-100 on top of the subscription
- Locked-in contract with cancellation fees
- Sub-contracted engineers, so you don't get to choose who arrives
- Wait times can stretch to several days at busy periods
- Long list of exclusions in the small print (see below)
Advanced Heating & Plumbing pay-per-visit (2026 pricing, all +VAT):
- Annual boiler service: £90-140
- Boiler repair when you need it: £120-450 (diagnosis dependent)
- Emergency boiler repair (out-of-hours): £180-600
- Gas safety certificate (CP12): £70-120
- No call-out fee, ever. Standard call-out and travel included.
- No subscription, no contract, no cancellation fee
- Prices quoted in advance. The price you agree is the price you pay.
- Gas Safe engineer on site within 2 hours
The numbers speak for themselves. If your boiler goes wrong once every two or three years, a cover plan would have cost you £600-1,500 for the same repair that costs £120-450 pay-per-visit. Add the £75-100 excess and the gap widens further. For most households, the sums simply don't add up.
What most cover plans don't cover
Cover plans have a lot of exclusions in the small print. Common carve-outs across the national plans include:
- Heat exchanger replacement (one of the most expensive components in a boiler)
- Repairs or servicing to underfloor heating
- Power flushing (removing sludge from the heating system)
- Central heating system blockages
- Issues caused by installations that don't match the manufacturer's instructions
- Boilers too old to source parts for
- Boiler replacement (they'll pay towards a new one at most, not the full cost)
- Operational faults caused by a poor original installation
- Flue systems
- Faults caused by sludge in the central heating system
We've had many customers arrive with cover plans they've held for years, only to be told at the point of a substantial repair that it wasn't covered. Frustrating, and expensive, given they've paid the subscription anyway.
How Advanced Heating & Plumbing works instead
We're the honest local alternative to a national cover plan:
- No call-out fee. Standard call-out and travel are always included in the price.
- Prices quoted before we start. The price you agree is the price you pay. No runaway invoices.
- Gas Safe, OFTEC and Part P certified. One local engineer with the right qualifications across gas, oil and electric. Trading since 1998.
- Gas Safe engineer on site within 2 hours. Phones are answered immediately, usually by an engineer.
- 1-year parts guarantee on everything we fit, manufacturer-backed where applicable.
- No lock-in. No monthly subscription, no contract, no cancellation fee. Call us when you need us.
Our experience with cover-plan boilers
We're called out to hundreds of boilers every year, and a significant portion of them are on national cover plans. We're often shocked at the state of them.
The recurring pattern: many of these boilers have been "serviced" by cover-plan engineers who never removed the casing. The actual service was little more than a probe in the flue. That's not a boiler service; that's box-ticking. It leaves the boiler with problems that get worse over time (sludge, corrosion, worn parts) until eventually something big breaks. And that's the point where the customer discovers what the plan doesn't cover.
You cannot properly service a boiler without removing the casing and physically inspecting the components. Full stop. If your cover-plan engineer isn't doing that, they're not really servicing your boiler.
Should you buy cover?
It's your money and your call. Here's our honest advice:
- If your boiler is out of warranty, older than 8-10 years, and you're worried about breakdown cost, self-insure. Put £25-40 a month into a savings account instead of a cover plan. Over a couple of years you'll build up enough to cover a full breakdown repair, with money left over.
- Get an annual boiler service from a Gas Safe engineer who actually removes the casing. That's the single biggest thing you can do to prevent breakdowns.
- When something does go wrong, call a local engineer directly. No excess, no waiting for a national's sub-contractor, no discovering you're not covered.
We serve Watford, Hertfordshire, London and Middlesex. Most of our customers are people who came to us in frustration after bad experiences with national cover plans and stayed because the alternative works better and costs less. Have a look at what they say if that helps.
