If your Vaillant boiler has displayed the F32 fault code, it means the fan inside the boiler isn’t working properly – or the boiler thinks it isn’t. This might sound minor, but the fan is vital to how your boiler runs safely.
I’m Tony from Advanced Heating and Plumbing, and I’ve fixed plenty of F32 issues across Watford, Hertfordshire, Middlesex and North London. Here’s everything you need to know if your boiler has stopped with this error.

When your boiler shows F32, it’s reporting a problem with the fan motor or its control. The fan is essential for pushing waste gases safely out of the flue – so if the fan isn’t running correctly, the boiler will refuse to ignite for safety reasons.
Sometimes the fan itself is fine, but the fault lies in the communication between the PCB and the fan. Either way, it needs investigation.
What Causes the Fan to Fail?
Here are the most common issues I come across when customers call about an F32 error:
🔹 Fan Motor Stuck or Burned Out
Over time, the fan motor can become stiff, noisy or fail completely. This stops the boiler from venting properly and causes a lockout.
🔹 Loose or Damaged Wiring
The cable between the PCB and the fan might be loose, broken or affected by moisture, especially in older systems.
🔹 Faulty PCB (Printed Circuit Board)
The fan might be working fine, but the boiler doesn’t know it. A failing PCB can misread or fail to trigger the fan correctly.
Signs of a Fan Issue (Before the F32 Appears)
- A quiet “click” but no whirring noise before ignition
- Boiler trying to start, then shutting down after a few seconds
- Faint burning smell or unusual humming from the boiler casing
- Boiler making unusual noises, especially before or after ignition attempts
Can You Fix It Yourself?
Fan-related faults vary – some are as simple as a failed connection, others require a new fan motor or PCB. I can:
- Test the fan and PCB interaction
- Check voltage and signals
- Replace faulty parts (carried in-van for many Vaillant models)
- Get your system running safely and smoothly again
Why Book a Professional Repair?
The F32 code isn’t one for DIY. Since it relates to combustion safety, it’s critical to let a Gas Safe registered engineer handle the fault.
You can:
- Try turning the boiler off at the mains for 30 seconds, then back on.
- Listen for the fan: if it doesn’t spin at all, it’s a clear sign of the fault.
- Don’t attempt to open the case – internal fans are only safe to inspect with the correct tools and checks.
